Quilt Pattern Designers: Belinda Rinehart and Jan Heddinger
Name: Belinda Rinehart Lives in: Des Moines, Iowa Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Apparel Design and Pattern Making, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa Quilting since: 1995. Teaching quilting since: 2008 Favorite techniques: Traditional piecing, hand quilting, hand piecing. Design philosophy: Since I like the look of sashing and borders but I don’t necessarily like the fuss, I constantly challenge myself to design blocks that create secondary designs and border blocks that can be added to the rows when the main part of the quilt is sewn together. Background: I spent two years designing Prom dresses for Alyce Designs, Inc. in Chicago. I also worked as head seamstress in a bridal salon for a few years before deciding to focus my creative energy on quilting and quilt design. Family: I’ve been married to my husband, Quinn Rinehart since 2001. We don’t have children. Instead, we have one very spoiled pug named Max. Activities and interests: Quilting and going to my quilt guild – of course, kintting, gardening, cooking, embroidery, and reading. | Name: Jan Heddinger Lives in: Des Moines, Iowa Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa Quilting since: I made my first 3 quilts in 1975 but didn’t quilt again until 1994. Teaching quilting since: 2008 Favorite techniques: Hand and machine appliqué and the latest technique I have learned. Design philosophy: I like to find ways to make traditional blocks look new by incorporating them with other blocks and techniques. Background: It took a trip to Paducah with mom & another sister for the quilting bug to bite - and it bit hard! Since then, I have always made my own designs. Since I was already designing my own quilts, it just seemed natural to start our own pattern line. Family: I married my husband, Paul Heddinger in 1999. Although we don’t have children, we have one extremely spoiled & bossy old Jack Russell terrier named Max. Yes, my dog and Belinda’s dog really do have the same name! There’s a story, of course, there is always a story. Activities and interests: Quilting retreats with my sisters, bicycling, gardening and time with family & friends. |
